MLCC Market Trends 2026: Demand, Supply & Prices

2026/09/24

MLCC (Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor) is one of the most fundamental and common passive components in electronic devices, long characterized by low unit cost, massive consumption and wide adoption. Driven by rapid growth in AI servers, high-speed optical modules and advanced automotive electronics, MLCC market demand is undergoing structural shifts. Particularly in AI computing hardware, higher power density and more sophisticated power management requirements raise the importance of high-capacitance, high-reliability MLCCs.

The current MLCC market does not see price hikes across all product lines; instead, it shows clear structural supply-demand imbalance. AI servers, optical modules and premium automotive electronics fuel surging demand for high-end MLCCs, while manufacturers keep reallocating production resources toward high-value products.

AI Servers Are Driving a New Wave of MLCC Demand

Rapid deployment of AI servers is a major driver of rising MLCC demand. Compared with conventional servers, AI servers house more GPUs and AI accelerators with higher power consumption and power density. More MLCCs are required per unit to meet complex power management, filtering and voltage stabilization needs. Therefore, demand growth stems not only from rising AI server shipments, but also from increased MLCC consumption per server and per circuit board. Some high-end AI servers use several times more MLCCs than traditional servers.

Notably, MLCC counts may rise further during design validation and mass production of AI accelerator platforms. Two TrendForce cases illustrate this trend. On the AMD MI450 platform, the per-board quantity of 47µF 2.5V X6S 0402 MLCCs jumped from 1,440 to 10,544, a 632% increase. For NVIDIA Vera Rubin, usage of 100µF 4V X6S 0805 MLCCs rose from 320 to 500, up roughly 56%.

Beyond GPU platforms, AI ASICs will further boost demand. AI accelerators including Google TPU V8t/i, AWS Trainium4 and Meta MTIA 400/450 are expected to enter concentrated mass production and deployment in the second half of 2026 and beyond. As cloud providers keep building AI infrastructure, these custom AI chip platforms also require large volumes of high-capacitance, high-reliability MLCCs for power management. Hence, mass rollout of AI ASICs from H2 2026 onward may further tighten demand for high-end MLCCs, especially high-capacitance variants.

High-Speed Optical Modules Create Another Demand Driver

Bandwidth within data centers keeps upgrading, with 800G and 1.6T optical modules seeing accelerated deployment. Compared with legacy optical modules, high-speed versions handle far higher data rates and therefore require more MLCCs for power filtering, decoupling and voltage stabilization. Industry data shows a single 1.6T optical module may use roughly 500–1000 MLCCs, making it a notable source of MLCC demand within AI infrastructure.

Rising MLCC demand for optical modules lies not only in quantity but also performance. These modules impose stricter requirements on MLCC capacitance, package size and reliability. Especially for 800G and 1.6T modules, power fluctuations can directly disrupt high-speed signal processing and system stability, raising the criticality of high-reliability MLCCs. Meanwhile, fast-growing orders from telecom vendors further fuel MLCC demand.

Automotive Electronics Adds Stable Long-Term Demand

Rapid growth of new energy vehicles keeps lifting MLCC demand. As vehicles grow more electrified and electronic, BMS, electric drive systems, on-board power supplies and various controllers consume massive MLCCs. NEVs use around 5–6 times more MLCCs than conventional gasoline cars; some BEVs can require up to 18,000 pieces per vehicle.

Meanwhile, advanced autonomous driving further boosts demand for high-grade automotive MLCCs. BMS, vehicle power systems, domain controllers, ADAS and self-driving systems demand stable power management and signal processing, imposing stricter requirements on MLCC temperature tolerance, reliability and capacitance. Demand for AEC-Q200 qualified automotive MLCCs, high-temperature, high-reliability and high-capacitance variants rises sharply.

Still, the automotive MLCC market shows obvious structural divergence, rather than a universal shortage. High-end MLCC demand surges for advanced intelligent driving and high-performance NEVs, while general automotive MLCCs used in gasoline cars and entry-level NEVs see steady demand. The automotive MLCC market is marked by stronger uptake of premium products and flat demand for standard parts, with widening supply-demand gaps across applications and specifications.

MLCC Supply Is Becoming More Structurally Tight

Rising demand from AI servers, high-speed optical modules and advanced automotive electronics reshapes MLCC supply landscape. Major manufacturers are reorienting production capacity, tightening supply for high-capacitance, high-reliability and server-grade MLCCs.

Major Suppliers Are Shifting Capacity

Leading vendors including Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Taiyo Yuden and Kyocera are shifting capacity away from consumer/general-purpose MLCCs toward AI server, automotive and high-end MLCCs. Driven by growing demand for AI servers and advanced automotive electronics, manufacturers prioritize high-capacitance, high-reliability products, further straining high-end MLCC supply.

High-End MLCC Capacity Is Hard to Expand

High-end MLCC capacity expansion is constrained by equipment, processes and yield. Lead times for premium production equipment can stretch 1–2 years, and new lines require lengthy construction and ramp-up cycles. High-capacitance and high-voltage products also carry greater manufacturing complexity.

Lead times for some premium X6S MLCCs have extended from 8 weeks to 20 weeks, while certain high-end types take 12–16 months. Even with capacity expansion plans, vendors cannot quickly deliver viable supply in the short term.

Major Suppliers Are Expanding

l Murata: Invests an additional approx. ¥80 billion to build server-grade MLCC capacity; current utilization sits near 95%.

l Taiyo Yuden: Originally planned 10% annual capacity growth. AI demand may lift this figure to ~15% going forward.

l Samsung Electro-Mechanics: Expands server-grade MLCC production via its new Philippine plant.

These expansion projects will gradually boost supply, yet new capacity takes time to come online. High-end MLCCs will likely remain under substantial supply-demand pressure through 2026–2027.

MLCC Prices Are Rising, But the Market Is Not Uniform

Price hikes are currently limited to high-end MLCCs instead of across the whole market. Demand surges and supply tightness are most pronounced for AI server MLCCs, high-capacitance grades, X6S types and high-reliability automotive MLCCs. Overseas suppliers including Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Taiyo Yuden have raised quotes for selected high-end MLCCs by roughly 15%–35%. Spot prices for scarce models have even doubled, with cumulative increases exceeding 50% for some premium products.

In contrast, standard consumer and general-purpose MLCCs do not face the same supply constraints. Some popular SKUs previously saw sharp short-term price spikes due to inventory hoarding and spot-market speculation. As the market stabilizes, spot prices for certain consumer-grade MLCCs have declined.

MLCC Supply Chain and Procurement Strategies Are Changing

Procurement cycles for high-end MLCCs are also shifting. Previously, companies typically placed orders 1–2 months in advance. Today, buyers need to reserve capacity 3–6 months ahead for some premium grades. For customers with steady demand such as AI server makers, LTAs (Long-Term Agreements) grow more critical to secure stable capacity allocation.

Meanwhile, firms must strengthen Safety Stock management. When sourcing high-end AI MLCCs, purchasing decisions should not rely solely on current pricing. Teams need to evaluate lead times, supplier capacity, order scheduling and future demand holistically. Proactive inventory planning mitigates production risks from extended lead times and supply volatility.
